A nine iron is a golf club with a heavily backward-angled hitting surface, which lofts the ball upward rather than forward, and enables you to hit short shots. So you can use a nine iron to practice in an area with limited space, that is, "hit nine iron [short] shots". The company apparently has a small field on its grounds where its employees can do this during a coffee break.
