What are the meanings of the following texts?

1- "Sustained, " Johnson said, ruling for Yale before Adam had even opened his mouth. "It's argumentative". What is the meaning of "It's argumentative"?

2-Her oldest child, the one who'd burned most brightly, was gone. What is the meaning of "burned most brightly"?

3-Before Adam could say anything, the two women were snipping at each other.What is the meaning of snipping at each other?

4- So scarcely twenty minutes after Camy had taken the stand, Tringali sat down, smoothed his pants and waited, poised to object if he felt Filppu's cross went over the line. What is the meaning of "smoothed his pants " and" Filppu's cross went over the line"/
