Meaning?

Hi," and

What is the meaning of "hugged herself" and "I haven,t sucked up to" in the following text?

One of her friend took her outside. It was cold and dark, and she hugged herself

as they stood on the sidewalk.

"I have really screwed everything up," she sobbed."I haven't taken the right classes, I haven't sucked up to the right professors and know I don't know what I am going to do."
