Meaning?

Hi,

What is the meaning of"all to no avail" and "numbered bundle" in the following text?

The legal opinion she read went on for, amass of foreign pages and pages a mass of foreign jargon that she would highlight ,underline, and reread-all to no avail. But at the end of class, when professor was done with a case, he'd tied it up in a neat , numbered bundle.

Thanks
