What is the meaning of "to stop still" in the following text?

She picked up her copy of the newspaper. On the front page was a five-column banner headline : LAGOON OF ARSENIC DISCOVERED IN N,WOBURNm She red the newspaper as if in trance. "Everything seemed to stop still for me," she recalled some years later.
