Hey guys,

Would you please explain the following bold sentence?

Trains had changed since her childhood, and the novelty of the experience amused her: a fat genie of a porter materialized when she pressed a button on a wall; at her bidding a stainless steel washbasin popped out of another wall, and there was a john one could prop one’s feet on.

Thank you

Dear Clive I found "the toilet" in the dictionary, but it doesn't make sense, I was wondering if it's a toilet how the one can put his feet on it?!

Dear Alphecca as I said I couldn't imagine how the one could put his feet on it! the sentence says the one prop the feet on it!

The idea seems to be this.
You could sit on your normal train seat and at the same time raise your feet on to the toilet.. People are often more comfortable with their feet raised.
