meaning

Hi

Please help me with the meaning of the underlined portion

Context: People addicted to computer screens

Even Intel (of all companies) experimented in 2007 with conferring four uninterrupted hours of quiet time every Tuesday morning on 300 engineers and managers. (The average office worker today, researchers have found, enjoys no more than three minutes at a time at his or her desk without interruption.) During this period the workers were not allowed to use the phone or send e-mail, but simply had the chance to clear their heads and to hear themselves think.

My guess: They cannot be without sending emails or checking their phones for messages more than 3 minutes.

As well as your guess, which is correct, is that not only does interruption come from their own curiosity--it comes from other uncontrolled sources. " I wonder also if these engineers and managers receive interruptions in the form of person-to-person distraction and incoming business calls on a land line. I think that a lot of the problem comes from an 'addiction' to being busy.

You mentioned "checking their phones for messages"; so I'm sure you mentally included "and making replies to them." Thank you, wilpeter.
I must agree with your observations, and as you have rightly said people look forward to such interruptions ( comments on their posts on social networking just as I may wait for what you have to say about this post of mine) instead of it being the other way for they or we have become so much addicted to seeing what others think of our posts and so on

True. Like a dog returning with that soggy ball, time after time, we need to feel we have a purpose. We want to be noticed, to please.
