meaning

Hi
Please tell me what the expression means

The boy stood on the burning deck,
Whence all but he had fled;
The flame that lit the battle’s wreck
Shone round him o’er the dead.

This is the first stanza from the poem Casabianca by Felicia Dorothea Hemans.

I think it refers to the ship which is being destroyed in the battle

Top answer

The "battle's wreck" is a wreck caused by a battle. A deck is a flat area of a ship where people can walk. In the poem, the deck is on fire, and the ship is a wreck.
