Vocabulary

meaning

Hi
Please tell me if I understood it rightly.

In the cockpit the atmosphere was more relaxed. The four-man flight crew had been making the Moscow-Polyarny-Moscow run for nearly a decade. The pilots, Evgeny Novoselov, 42, and Andrey Lamanov, 43, were both veterans, with nearly 20,000 hours of flying experience between them.

(They have worker together for such a period of time.)

No -- it means that if you add up the hours of experience the two men have, it's almost 20,000. So maybe one has 15,000 hours of experience, and the other has 5,000. It doesn't say anything about whether or not they were working together for any of that time.

No. Each has flown many hundreds/thousands of hours. If you add Evgeny's total number of flying hours to Andrey's, the total will be nearly 20,000 hours. We have no real idea of whether or not they have ever flown together before, though the reference to the four-man flight crew suggests that
