Hi everybody
Will you please tell me what is the meaning of "was crowding his rear flank " and "whoopie"in the following text:
While a former cagey general who had no problem allowing his foot soldier to die to achieve his goals was crowding his rear flank.
Whoopie.
Please note that the word "whoopie" is written in the text with italic font.

"was crowding his rear flank" means "was very close (uncomfortably close) behind him".

"Whoopie" is an expression of delight, but here is presumably ironic, i.e. this character was very far from delighted at the situation.
