Vocabulary

meaning

Hi
Please tell me what the bolded portion means in the context.

These lines taken from wikipedia are said by Aldous Huxley's
brother about him.
Huxley was a writer.

I believe his blindness was a blessing in disguise. For one thing, it put paid to his idea of taking up medicine as a career ... His uniqueness lay in his universalism. He was able to take all knowledge for his province.

My guess: Did he use all that he knew for the furtherance of the field of medicine?

No, I don't think it means that. I believe "his province" refers to the extent of his intellectual realm. He could include all knowledge within it.

The image is almost that of a king claiming a piece of land. His province was all knowledge.

I'd say it means that when he talked about anything, he seemed to talk as an expert. He was not a man well versed in some things but ignorant in others.
