Meaning

Hi. Please help me with the meaning of "I think is very true to life" and also please clarify the subject of "is" in the text below.

I had a great deal of time to read and my favorite authors are Thomas Hardy who is accused of being gloomy but I think is very true to life---and Willa Cather.

Edit : I think the subject is "Thomas Hardy" and "is very true to life" means the writer has a realistic look to the life.
Am I right?

Top answer

Yes. He portrays realistic situations and characters. Very strictly speaking, I think that the grammatical subject of "is" is "who", but "who" refers to Thomas Hardy so it amounts to the same thing.

  • There should be a comma after "read" at least.
  • Also, if a dash is to be used I would prefer to see a pair of them.
