Vocabulary

meaning

Hi
Please help me with the meaning.

context :This is from a passage adapted from "The Necklace," by Guy de Maupassant

But she was wretched, for women have neither caste nor breeding—in them beauty, grace, and charm replace pride of birth.
My guess: When it comes to women it is not their caste or breeding that makes them well known: They become popular because of their beauty.

I think your assessment is good. To add, the mention of grace and charm, to me, indicates that women must work hard to earn their place in society, while the men can be given their place by being in a caste or certain family.
