Please help me with the meaning of the highlighted portion.. Gosh: a mild expression of surprise or enthusiasm as to be put in place of 'God', particularly in fear of saying Lord's name in vain.

particularly to avoid disobeying the Biblical injunction not to say the name of *** (for fear of punishment in this life or in the next).

(I'm not a Bible scholar, so I don't know if this is theologically correct, but it's close!)

One of the Ten Commandment is not to use the name of the Lord in vain, i.e., basically, to call Him when you want nothing with Him, for example, when you say something like "Oh my ***! That thing just exploded!", or "Oh my ***! No way he proposed her!" in response to something suddenly shocking or amazing. *** considers that such a use of His name is vain, and it is a sin.
