meaning

Hi, could you please help me with the meaning of "anticipated" in the following sentence?
"Both the mood and dramaturgy of absurdity were anticipated as early as 1896 in Alfred Jarry's French play."
Is it saying that the mentioned play is the first work in the mode of literature of the absurd?

Not exactly. There were some of the elements present, or perhaps hints of what was to come in the future.

Almost. "Anticipated" here means foreshadowed, predicted, gave an indication of what was coming. It says that Jarry's play anticipated the mood and dramaturgy of absurdity - so the way I would read the sentence, it doesn't say Jarry's play was the first work in the mode of the literature of the absurd, but rather that Jarry's play contained elements which were very similar to the mood and
