Hi
Please help me with the meanings of some expressions in italics.
Context:
These lines are from Best Seller by O Henry. The story is about a man who criticizes best sellers for presenting what he calls unrealistic stories wherein ordinary men marry woman of royal households. Ironically he a plate -glass salesman marries a rich lady.
1. ..these kind of love stories are rank on- the-level.
2. he rings in three solid pages about America's uncrowned sovereigns.
3.He has a sword that might free Schutzenfestenstein from the plots of traitors.
4. His talk about freeing anything sounded as much like canned sardines.
How is it connected with canned sardines?
5. I did not mind let plate glass business go to smash for a while.

note in 4. opening canned sardines is supposed to be easy- AND it when he says "...sounds as much as canned sardines" it also hints the fact that that schutzenfetenstein's pronunciation is supposed to sound similar/rhyme to that of 'canned sardines'! now theres a pun!
