Meaning

"It would require a lot of small saplings to counteract our very large global footprint (carbon emissions), and too often we assume that a grid of conifers is a true replacement of an ancient wood we have destroyed."

In the sentence above, I wonder what is a grid of. Does it mean the size of a football ground?
And I doubt what an ancient wood is. It it an old wood?
