Meaning

It may also have been partly because of where alders could live that sinister powers were attributed to them in times past.

After because of there are two verbs (live and were).
I don't quite undestand the above paragragh. Anyone help me please.

It is not well cast, but:

Sinister powers may have been attributed to alders partly because of where they can live (i.e. in dark, swampy places, I suppose).
