meaning

Hello,

Aunt Irene's house turned out to be exactly as they had imagined it , a grand two-storey villa with thick stone walls, lomg, narrow windows, heigh ceilings, and plenty of dark nooks and corners.

What is the meaning of the words in the bold letters?

Could anybody explain it?

Thanks.
