meaning

Hello,

He kept that garden as a mangoose would keep it, with tooth and jump and spring and bite, till never a cobra dared show its head inside the walls.

These lines are from "Rikki Tikki Tavi" written by Rudyard Kipling.

I am able to understand the meaning of the given sentences.

Can anybody explain the meaning of the above sentences?
