Meaning

Hello,

What is the meaning of "only to be told" in the following sentence?

He arrived from the airport only to be told to take a sightseeing tour of the city and when he finally got his chance to go to the company to make his presentation, he was told that the CEO had already left.

Top answer

Hi, Here's a simpler example. He arrived at the bus station at 5pm, only to be told that his bus had left at 4pm. It means he was given information that was a surprise, and was in some way 'opposite to' what he had expected.
