Collocation is the habit that many words have of appearing with other words. 'Little' collocates with 'boy', 'girl', 'time', 'value', and many other words-- we see or say them together: 'he's a little boy', 'I have little time', etc. On the other hand, 'little' does not collocate with 'small'-- we seldom or never use them side-by-side.
