mean + object + gerund

Hi there,

I came across this sentence in English grammar in context:

His beliefs _____ him living in extreme poverty.

The key suggests either 'meant' or 'involved' into the gap, but the object pronoun splitting the verb + gerund construction doesn't seem right to me.
I would leave out 'him' or use that-clause after the verb instead.
Is the suggested answer correct and why?

Thanks for your comments in advance.

Paul Evdokimov but the object pronoun splitting the verb + gerund construction doesn't seem right to me. The pronoun is the subject of the gerund. He hated her singing in the shower every morning.
