Meals

Hello,

The zero article is in general use for meals as an institution.

I could not understand the meaning of 'institution' in the above context.

1. Where are we having dinner to night?

2.Where are we having the dinner to night?

Are Both (1) and (2) correct ?

Thanks.

Top answer

The first is correct in most contexts. 'Dinner' here is the 'institution', the meal that we have every night. The first is possible if we are referring to a particular dinner that has been arranged.
