Me and someone else?

Hi,

I always heard the usage of 'Me and someone else ...' when an English speaker was expressing the meaning 'Someone else and I ...' in daily talk.

For example:

1. Tom and I are going to see a movie.

2. Me and Tom are going to see a movie.

I'd like to know if the second sentence is a correct sentence. Is it a common spoken expression meaning exactly 'Tom and I', or any difference?

Thanks!

Whilst you will hear the second sentence quite often in spoken English it is not strictly correct. When deciding if you should use "me" or "I" then leave out the other person to see which is correct.

You would not say "Me am going to see a movie" It is "I am going to see a movie"

Your first sentence is correct. It also follows the convention of putting the other person first.

You will HEAR:
Me and Tom are going to the new Harry Potter movie.
Yeah? I already seen it.
I got no desire to see that one.
I ain't fixin' to see it either

None of these are standard English. All of them are used. Maybe some day they will be standard. If you are leaning English, I'd recommend you wait until they are.

As was said in a previous response, simply take out the other person and see how it sounds.

First, you always put yourself second, so it would never be I and Tom or Me and Tom.

However, even putting yourself second, it would not be, "Tom and me...," it is "Tom and I are going..."
