Suppose I am sending a text message to my professor to appoint a meeting with him. And I want to fix a particular time. That's the context.

Thank you! But I need to know one more thing. If I say someone that--

"May I have a cup of coffee."

Is it grammatically correct? Or should I say "Can I get a cup of coffee?"

"May I have a cup of coffee?" is fine, though many people these days use can or could rather than may.

"Can I get a cup off coffee suggests to me that the person is asking permission to make a cup of coffee for him/herself, but I have noticed that it is quite commonly used in the north of England in the sense of "Can I have ...?"
