Grammar

may/can have attended

Hi
I have a question about grammar

A: Why wasn't your boyfriend at the party last night?
B: He.....the lecture at Shaw Hall. I know he very much wanted to hear the speaker.

a. can have attended b. may have attended

Which do you choose: a or b? Could you please explain why?

Thanks
