My Graduation Ceremony

In the summer of 2008 was one of the most glorious moments that occurred in my life. After four years of hard work, it was finally the time to shine and show everyone what we were capable of. I graduated from high school and at that time, everybody was extremely excited and all they could think of was freedom. However, I had butterflies in my stomach while also feeling extremely happy at the same time. The celebration of our graduation was a moment to remember.

On the morning of my graduation, we had to do our rehearsal. It was a bright warm sunny Sunday morning. I woke up feeling extremely rushed and I felt as if I was going to urinate because I was so nervous. Then, there I was running all over the place making sure that my white graduation gown and cap was all ready. As soon as I got everything ready, I showered as fast as a speeding bullet and got ready like superman. I got in the car with my “too smelly” friends, in a good way, and drove off to Blaisdell Arena where our graduation was going to be held. On the way to Blaisdell, I saw my other friends on the highway speeding in front of us. The driving gave me a rush of adrenaline as I was busily tapping my foot on the car floor.

After the rehearsal, we went home to take a shower so that we wouldn’t smell because I wanted to present myself in a clean and well-mannered way. I was looking forward to becoming a new person who was about to enter a new chapter in my life. As much as possible, I wanted my gown to be ironed but my mom didn’t have time but it was okay, it was white and smooth. From my perspective, my gown was very presentable. After I wore my white dress, I got in the car with my father. He was the one who wanted to drop me off to Blaisdell that way I would get there safely. I love my father so much that I gave him a big hug before he left me at the arena. I could tell my father was very happy because I sprayed the perfume that he brought especially for me onto my gown.

As we, the class of 2008 gathered together, we looked so bright. We were line up in rows of more than ten. I felt cold and I had goose bumps all over me. I just couldn’t believe that this was the day, a new beginning. Everyone got ready and started walking inside the arena. The moment I entered, I saw a lot of lights shining brightly at the center stage where we were assigned to sit. Camera lights were flashing all over the place. I guess this is what celebrities fell like when they are surrounded by the paparazzi. Lights surrounding the stage were then dimmed including where the audiences are seated. As for us, we were the center of attention so of course we were stunning.

During the ceremony, I felt satisfied and proud to finally able to attain my diploma and show my parents what I’m capable of. I couldn’t find where my family was. There were just so many people that I couldn’t even count. Some of them were even seating in the stairs. Everyone then stood up and sang our national anthem which was followed by the state and our school anthem. I don’t really remember the name of our school anthem anymore as it feels like ages ago. All I could remember was that wherever we go, we will remain friends forever no matter what the future holds for each of us. There were a lot of speeches going on and when my name was called, I got all excited and that made my hands very cold. I could hear people shouting and screaming our names so loud to the point that I could have become deaf. As I walked towards my principal who was giving out our diplomas, I was shaking. When she gave me my diploma, she shook my hands. Her hands were warm and comforting. As I got my diploma, she kindly congratulated me with her uplifting voice and I took a picture with her.

At the end of the ceremony, we left the arena and walked together outside in a straight line to the hall where people could greet us. Our friends and family were there on the side waiting to come in. Each of us went towards the white pole following the order of our last names. As we all took our place, our families were able to come in as well as our friends whom were not able to attend the ceremony as tickets were so limited. I was thrilled because there were a lot of people carrying lei’s, balloons, and roses. I was surrounded by the fragrance of the sweet-scented lei’s and aromatic roses. However, as I gave lei’s to my fellow classmates, the stink of sweat crept into my nose. It was very unpleasant but I understood it because I knew I was sweating too. There were so many people that greeted us. Some were given lei candies including me and they tasted so sweet and delicious.

Overall, I have to say that I enjoyed these special moments with my fellow graduates despite remembering the times we spent together and knowing we will never be able to go back to what we had. It may just be a day but it sure did put a great stamp in my heart. It was scary at first but then it gave me a happy feeling afterwards. It was very unexplainable. I still can’t believe how awesome I felt that night. I was very excited with a bit of nervousness to face a new world. My high school graduation was an unforgettable moment.
