Volunteerism is very important to teach children about how to work with older volunteers and to behave to be good volunteer. This project aims to refresh the value of volunteerism among students between tenth to twelve grades. Many ways to instill the value of volunteerism to students by participating with organization that aims to help people and the community such as Red Crescent Group, library assistant and Friends of the Environment Group. While students are participating in these groups, they have lifelong learning. “Students are learning to appreciate the value of volunteerism as a way of providing essential social and human services of fulfilling personal needs, and of continuing to grow and learn” (Bard, 1999, p.13). Volunteerism is to teach student or volunteer experience, skill, patience and knowledge. These aspects are enough to characterize by young students to build strong and conscious generation. Volunteerism is a part of education, which teaches students many things about life. Linking the theme of volunteerism as essential of the nation for next generation is to take the initiative in leading this nation and to instill behaviors voluntary positive. It is important that transcends them and increases the effectiveness of the countries, and pushed this trend to think carefully about how I can motivate student to be initiatives and a useful member of and active in the community. Skills that children acquired from volunteerism are to benefit and affect psychological and educational. Especially that volunteering is a wealth of social and humanitarian value contribute to the implantation of a lot of human values if they are encourage all members of the community towards him, and children are targeted in this project.
Theorist like John Dewey argues a strong connection between education and personal experiences. “He had definite requirements for effective educational experience by saying experience is a necessary component in education” (Bard, 1999, p.53). The experience that Dewey theory mentions could be volunteerism, which gain student a great experience. Teacher and school social worker are responsible to improve this value among students by encouraging, inviting to participate, and showing desirable consequence for whose are volunteer. Especially young students are attracted to awards, gifts, and thanks sign. “The signs of appreciation that seems to mean the most to volunteers are those that come from the youngsters” (Wachter, 1999, p.59). Wachter confirms the importance of appreciation signs to volunteers how it encourages them to volunteer again. This relate to Skinner’s theory that argues ‘operant conditioning’ from causing a consequence to occur. Skinner argues, “When someone does something that brings about desirable consequence, the person may repeat the behavior in similar circumstance” (Bard, 1999, p.56). Theorist Alfred Adler argues a strong connection between person as individual and social communication “Social Interest: Means the person's consciousness and his awareness of the humanitarian community, and its direction towards dealing with the social world around it. He believes that people need to cooperate with each other in order to achieve personal goals and other social. And social concern is the standard of the mental health (Adler); because the engine of sympathy and altruism, protecting the individual from selfishness, and make him feel the importance and existence”. (Saleh A A, 2007).
Volunteerism is not only benefit the facet of work, but also significantly promote the volunteer. It is also, “increased awareness of important social issues, greater appreciation for diversity, and decreased negative stereotypes were attributed to the volunteer experience” (Joseph R. Ferrari, 1999, p.126). This value helps volunteer to behave professionally and educated. This project is a big chance for younger learners to cooperate with the community and it has a large impact on their learning as well. For example, “John Dewey, an advocate of service-learning, believed that students would learn more effectively and become better citizens if they engaged in service to the community and had this service incorporated into their academic curriculum” (Education, 1999).
This project is encouraged before in the UAE, particulay in the ministry of Education, but we want to enhance this value by applying voluntary program in school. This project will help me as future school scoial worker to see generation awared, educated and well behaved because voluntary work teaches volunteer more than takes his time. This project helps teachers to have students with resposibility, experience and knowledge about works and community. The UAE encourages volunteers, espcially students and it establishes many organizations that support any volnuteer work such as Takatof and Injaaz. H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan says that “Our country deserves the best that we can give it giving back to society is something that brings out the best in every one of us” (Takatof, 2009). Our bosses support any voluntary work, they support any projects that encourage people to volunteer, and shows voluntary work benefits other gulf countries. UAE and gulf countries are one country that they help each other and provide assistants by volunteers. In addition, poor countries need more volunteers from developed countries like UAE to support people by distributing of essential needs.
IB program is ‘designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond” (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2005). This program is an exellecnt and successful in producing challenged and talent studnets. So, it important to apply IB program in high schools, particullary in public schools where we are going to target. It is about currcilums that students must choose one from each groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of exeprince in language, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. Many countries concern IB Program such as China. “There are 55 IB World Schools in China offering one or more of the three IB programmes”. Starting from small numbers of concerning IB programmes increase in most countries, espcially developded countries like UAE which “There are 20 IB World Schools in United Arab Emirates offering one or more of the three IB programmes” (International Baccalaureate Organization, 2005). All of these schools are private schools which follow American and Austrilain protocol. For that reason, we target public school to integrate IB program with curriculim.
