In the book “The Lovely Bones” the characters suffered grief after losing a love

one. Grief is defined as the suffering or distress over affliction or loss. Grief occurs after

death of a love one, end of a relationship, or loss of wealth. According to , their

are five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Depression, Bargaining and Acceptance.

The first stage of grief is Denial. In the Lovely Bones the parents (Abigail and

Jack) are in denial about their daughter’s death. After receiving a phone call from the

police saying that they found a body part Jack says “Nothing is ever certain my father

says.(Pg 24)” The father is in denial because he still believes that Susie is alive even after

the police tell him they have found a elbow. He is not thinking clearly, because it would

be impossible for Susie to be alive with one elbow. Abigail is in denial, after her

husband Jack tells her that they have found blood, and a elbow. The mom says

”Nothing is ever certain, my mother said, clinging to it as he had hope she might.” (Page

22). The mother really thinks that Susie is alive after all the evidence pointed to her

death she is clearly in denial.

The stage of grief is Anger. Jack and Lindsey showed anger toward Susie’s

death. A quote from the novel that proves Jack was angry is “The father showed anger by

destroying the ship he and Susie worked on together. “In the closet were more ships he

had build alone, and then those we had made together. Some were perfect, but their sails

browned; some had sagged or toppled over after years. Then there was the

one that had burst into flames in the week before my death. He smashed that one first.

My heart seized up. He turned and saw all the others, all the years they marked and the

hands that had held them. His dead father’s, his dead child’s. I watched him as he

smashed the rest. (Page 52)” Jack was angry, and to deal with his anger he destroys the

ships that he and Susie worked on. Another character from the novel that showed angry

was Lindsey. A quote from the novel which proves that Lindsey was angry is “ My

father listened to Lindsey in her room. Bang, the door was slammed shut. Thump, her

books were thrown down. Squeak she fell onto her bed. Her clogs, boom, boom were

kicked onto the floor. (Page 67)” This quote proves to me that Lindsey was angry about

Susie’s death and that she did not know how to deal with the death of her sister. She was

angry because she wanted the police to arrest the person who killed her sister.

The third stage of grief is Depression. In the novel the Lovely Bones Lindsey,

and Abigail showed depression. Lindsey was depressed in the novel because of her sister

death. Lindsey refused to look in mirrors, and took showers in the dark. While in the

shower, she would cry thinking about sister. She imagined Susie fighting and running

away from Mr. Harvey. A quote from the novel proving this point is “Even Lindsey was

not immune. She avoided mirrors. She now took her showers in the dark. She would

leave the dark shower and feel her way over to the towel rack. She would be safe in the

dark the moist steam from the shower still rising off the tiles encased her. If the house

was quiet or is she heard murmurs below her, she knew she would be undisturbed. This

was when she could think of me and she did so in two ways: She either thought Susie,

just that one word, and cried there, letting her tears roll down her already damp cheeks,

knowing no one would see her, no one would quantify this dangerous substance as grief,

or she would imagine me running, imagine me getting away, imagine herself being taken

instead fighting until she was free. (Page 67) Jack also was depressed about his

daughter’s death. After destroying the ships that he and Susie built together Jack begins

to cry and become depressed. A quote from the novel that proves this is “He was about to

smash the mirror over my dresser, rip the wallpaper down with his nails, but instead he

fell against my bed, sobbing, and balled the lavender sheets up in his hand. My father

turned but was unable to stop his tears. He slid to the floor with the sheets still in his fists,

and then he opened his arms. He had to ask my brother twice, which he had never had to

before, but Buckley came to him. (Page 52-53)”

The fourth stage of grief is Bargaining. In the novel Jack the father does the

bargaining stage. After figuring out that Mr. Harvey was the one that killed his daughter

he begs, pleas and harasses the police to find evidence proving that Mr. Harvey

murdered his daughter. A quote from the novel proving this is “ I don’t want to sound

irrational, Detective Fenerman,” my father said. I’m a certain there’s a man in the

neighborhood who knows something, my father said. He was staring out of the window

of his upstairs den, toward the cornfield. Who is it, what led you to believe this? Len

Fenerman asked. My father told him about the tent, about how Mr. Harvey had told him

to go home, about saying my name about how weird the neighborhood thought Mr.

was with no regular job and no kids. (Page 69)

The fifth stage of grief is Acceptance. In the novel, Jack finally accepts that Susie

is dead. After Jack has a heart attack, he accepts that Susie is dead. He realized that he is

hurting the family that he has left. A quote from the novel that proves this is “ My father

dreamed that one day he might teach another child to love ship in bottles. He knew there

would be both sadness and joy in it: that it would always hold an echo! (Page 368)” This

quote tells me that the father is done grieving Susie death and wants to move on with his

life.

In conclusion, I have learned that the five stages of grief can affect anyone. I have

also learned that it will take time for a family to grief a loss of someone who has died in

their family. After reading the lovely bones I would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book is filled with negative topics that would not be good for anyone to read. The

book also ends bad. I think that the author rushes to end the book. But overall I think that

this book teaches a life lesson.
