May I use: "The couple have been broken up"?

I wrote an example about addicted to facebook:

"To be more specific, my close friend in HCM city, every time he and his girlfriend have coffee, he always looks at his smartphone and surfs Facebook. He usually misses their conversation, and, as a result, they have been broken up."

I'm confusing with the tenses in the sentences: "he usually misses their conversation" and "they have been broken up" or "they broke up". Which should I use?

My idea is that: those two guys said goodbye already (once only) because the man was addicted to facebook.

One more question, should I use ex-girlfriend instead of girlfriend?

Thank you

Tuan ChauHe usually misses their conversation, and, as a result, they have been broken up.
For some strange reason, although I do know it's incorrect to say they have been broken up, I don't know why.
