May I use 'But' or 'So' in front of a sentence?

Hi! Sorry for a silly question.

Will it be wrong if I place a conjunction before a sentence?

Hi, It's OK, to add style and/or emphasis. But don't do it a lot or it will just seem odd and wrong. Clive

It's OK, to add style and/or emphasis.
But don't do it a lot or it will just seem odd and wrong.

To add to Clive's reply, the following are two sentences using "So'  and  'But'. 
So long as agriculture is an enterprise carried out in the open air, crops (and therefore working capital) will always be at risk. 

But a series of unlucky breakdowns and a dire shortage of sponsorship curtailed his career.
