Are you using pet as a verb or a noun or an adjective?
If you want someone to place their hand on the bird and stroke it, you command them to do so by saying "Pet the bird". Yes.
But if you have a bird which is your pet, you don't say "This is my pet the bird". You say "This is my pet bird".
