Molesley: I'm Molesley, Sir. Your butler and valet.
Mattew: Mr Molesley, I...
Mrs Crawley: May I introduce ourselves? I'm Mrs Crawley and this is my son Mattew Crawley.
Molesley: I'll just give Mr Taylor a hand with the cases.
The above dialogue is from British TV series Downton Abbey. An earl had no male heir and Matt went to the Abbey and became his heir. when Matt was talking, his mother interrupted him. I think it was the etiquette of the upper class, but I am not clear about this. was it inappropriate for a master to introduce themselves to a butler?
Thanks!
I think you can rely upon the show's writers and producer to make sure the depiction of genteel manners was appropriate for the time period.

was it inappropriate for a master to introduce themselves to a butler? Yes. But Mrs Crawley is portrayed by the writer as a woman who dislikes the class system and who wants to treat servants in a more egalitarian manner. We see this again and again as the series progresses.
