May I get an order of barbecue wings?

Hi teachers.

I am studying restaurant expressions and I am wondering if there is any difference between 'an order of barbecue wings' and just 'barbecue wings'?

I guess that I want a serving of barbecue or a portion for one person.

Are they all the same?

I assume not every food needs this expression. If so, what kind of food needs this expression 'an order of sth?

Thanks in advance.
