It seems that you use a lot of words to say this: I want to study and write a thesis for a Master's degree rather than directly entering a PhD research programme. During my studies, I will consider going on for a PhD.

I think these are your two points
1) a PhD degree to develop my knowledge.
2) a strong background in research.

They are not separate points. To get a PhD at major university, you have to do research that extends the body of knowledge on some specialty. And if you are applying for a Master's degree, and not directly into a PhD program, it is not really relevant. An application should give clear evidence of critical thinking. This kind of logic does not do that.

I require more academic background in Computer Science theory as well as doing programming exercises in computer labs to get a job in either applied research or industry.

Both a PhD programme and postdoctoral work are research-intensive, whereas a Bachelors or Master's degree may not require the candidate to do any research at all.
