I am writing in response to your advertisement in xxxx inviting applications for the position of Program Officer in your company

I have an academic background in development, with a master’s degree in economics, (with a thesis on development projects’ evaluation) and a post-master’s specialization in International Cooperation for Development.

I have worked for more than ten years in the international development industry in Latin America as project manager, country director and technical expert on behalf of many organizations (international and local NGOs, as well as consulting firms).
Main subjects were poverty reduction, child protection and local economic development.

Living in Latin developing countries and working along with the poor gave me a first-hand insight on the reality of the field, that is which are the most recurrent problems and bottlenecks which could affect the implementation of a project, and how to find out the most effective solution.
Being in charge of project management I gained extensive experience in every step of project cycle and field management: appraisal, formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, management of partnerships and coordination of field staff.
This kind of experience would be very useful in order to effectively support and advise your implementation units in both ordinary and critical situations.
On the other hand working as country director I could strengthen other specific relevant skills which I consider fundamentals to perform in your position: I got used to keep a countrywide vision and to frame a consistent national strategic plan; I have been conducting a multi-project financial supervision and monitoring results, and I have been using versatile communication skills to keep constant interaction with different type of key stakeholders (from grassroots communities up to line ministers).
Of course, along with hands-on project management and country coordination tasks, I have carried out also a variety of conceptual and analytical works, writing essays, technical notes, reports, systematizations and evaluations.
As part of my duties I have been in charge of drafting concept notes and full projects proposal for different donors’ calls, (EU, UN agencies and private sector) proving time management abilities and keen attention to details and deadlines.

Lastly, I am fully operative in three languages, Spanish, French and English (with the former certificated by the Michigan EPCE).

I am intimately convinced that your commitment is really meritorious because the elderly are not only one of the most vulnerable group among the poor (together with the children and the handicapped), but they are also under-represented within the international development agendas. I would be really excited to support your mission and to join a team of such a professional and human value.
