Hi everyone,

Could you guys help me clarify the meaning of this sentence? "He may have given her a slap. But that's what most men would do when provoked and driven to the extremes."

So did the man slap her? If he did, why there's "but" at the beginning of the second sentence? Thank you in advance

It doesn't say explicitly that he slapped her. The 'but' here is more like 'But if he did . .
