May God bless you

Hi,

Most of the time, I use the auxiliary verb 'may' to say something more politely.

However, when you read articles on 'christianity' or the bible, I often find many scriptures saying with 'may'.

It sounds like it's got a meaning of 'hope' or 'wish'.

Example:

/*

May God bless you

*/

What's the meaning of 'may' here, I wonder ?

I kind of understand the meaning of the sentence, however, even so, I don't know how to use the 'may' to make such a sentence.

Does it make sense? Well, I hope so.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Anonymous!

However, I already have understood that it's a helping verb.

Do you mean that it helps the speaker to say more politely (<= probably not this one as it's a helping verb) or Do you mean it has the same meaning of '*** will bless you.' or 'I hope that the *** bless you' and it just happens to be an old way of saying ( I don't think a lot of young people'd like

How about "May it come to pass that *** sees fit to bless you." So yes, roughtly, "I hope *** blesses you."

May the Lord bless you and keep you, etc.

Thanks, Mrs. GG.

How are you today?

I hope you're having a lovely day!

Well, Mrs. GG, I wish I could say like you:)!!

Hopefully one day, like hero 'Terry Fox' did when he did marathon across the Canada.

I've read about him today and it was very touching and was mixture of sad and happy ending.

I wished he was still alive after his achievement.
