I think the modal verbs 'may' and 'might' might/may indicate the present and past uses of the same word respectively, but at the same time, I think they both can be used to indicate tentativeness, although there might be a difference in degree. Besides I think both can be used to say what he/she wants to say in the present. Right?
eg, John said that he might go ahead and file for divorce. John said that he may go ahead and file for divorce.
