Mating, nesting and pecking order?

Hello,

Again I have a problem with understanding what the author means, Please help me with what is in red:

The "R-Complex" mind is sometimes called the "irrational" brain that just kicks and screams or pouts and whines to get it's own way (to survive and protect itself). The "R-Complex" governs self-preservation and survival. It is responsible for individuality, territoriality and privacy. Mating, nesting and pecking order are all attributed to the function of the "R-Complex." It is in coontrol during "downshifting" and spurting chemicals, such as adrenalin, histamine and cortico-steroids.

Is he talking about humans only or about both humans and animals, since animals have the same "R-complex" brain or the Reptilian brian that humans have? But he can't be talking about animals because the chapter speaks about the human brain. However what made me think that he included animals is that when he said ( mating, nesting and peking order)... My question is does it apply to humans too? and if so, did he mean by "nesting" making a home? and what about pecking order?

help me understand it so that I can translate, please.

The writer is speaking metaphorically about human beings. Mating - finding a mate/partner. Nesting - establishing a home.
