Math Problem

How much is 1, 20p replied the assistant. How much is 2, 40p replied the assistant. Ill take 112, that will be 60p replied the assistant. What am I buying?

I think that my original answer was better.

The items are house numbers to attach to the door of your house or apartment. Each individual number costs 20p. Two of them together cost 40p. Three of them cost 60p.
etc. So when I buy the numbers 1,1, and 2, then I pay 60 p.

I think now that your first interpretation was correct. I read it as the number two costing 40p, which now seems to be incorrect.
