Materials vs model volcano

Can I say,

To win the science project, we had to make the it perfectly. So my father prepared a lot of

needed materials / materials that needed to design and build a volcano / a model volcano for

the science competition.

1) You need to say "To win the science competition / award." You make/prepare/build the project, but win the competition / award.

2) My father prepared the materials that were needed (passive voice). You can also say "prepared the materials needed to design and build a model volcano."
