Matchstalk / matchstick

I was just on the point of correcting the Radio Times for having referred to "Brian and Michael's 1978 hit 'MatchstalkMen and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs'", when I discovered that that's exactly what the song was titled. (it's about L.S.Lowry -

Googling for "matchstalk" produces, almost exclusively, hits on the song title, suggesting that B & M made the word up.
However, I have some faint recollection that my father, an inveterate pipe smoker who put his burnt matchsticks back in the box, called such remnants "matchstalks".
