Mat

Can I say,

Peter put a mat on the table and some food on it.

P/s: Do we use "mat" or cloth table to cover the table before putting the food on it?

Peter put a tablecloth down and set out some food.
Or: Peter put place mats down and set out some food.

Your sentence is grammatically correct but misleading. As another has pointed out, a mat (short for "place mat") goes in front of a person and usually holds a single set of dishes and utensils while a tablecloth
