Master Application Review?

Hello,

it would be very kind if anyone of you could review my essay for Master application since I'm not a native speaker. For this essay several questions needed to be answered.
I appreciate any kind of feedback Emotion: smile

Thank you Emotion: smile

Your motivation for taking the MSc programme of your choice.

If you have ever played a strategy game you may sympathise the feeling that I have when thinking about "Strategy Design". Reflecting situations logically, planning the next move while thinking how the other players might react, finding out about clues to predict a development. It is kind of being a detective. Also "Strategy Design" includes this part. It is important to analyse the brand and competitors, searching clues to predict customers needs, finding out about the whole potential of a brand and/or a product. Another aspect I like is that it is important to sympathise with people to find ways to improve their lives.

The first time that I got in touch with "Strategic Design" was during the course "Marketing for Creative World Changers" at the FH Xxxxxx University of Applied Sciences. We had to think about a product, which doesn't exist yet and find out about a strategy to lead this product to success. This was the time when my interest for this topic arose.

Besides the head of the company, where I did my internship, will change in September 2017. Since the new administration has a lot of new ideas for the company I was also asked to think about opportunities for "company name". This was a great chance to find out more about "Strategiy Design" and to apply that knowledge to a real case.

Furthermore, the combination of "Strategy Design" and the option of choosing under a wide range of design related courses due to your interest is unique and makes this programme special. It represents especially what I like about design: it is manifold and diversified. This is perfect for a person like me who has a lot of interests. Design is a discipline where having several interests, even is an advantage.

Why are you interested in TU Delft and what do you expect to find here?

During my research about master programmes TU Delft caught my interest due to its high reputation through rankings (e.g. Busines Week) and various people who recommended TU Delft to me. A friend of mine also began his studies in Integrated Product Design at TU Delft in September 2016. He told me about the high standard and that students skills and talents are unfold fully through challenging and interesting exercises. Overall, I expect to broaden my knowledge and horizon in Design in Delft. I think that a lot of theoretical knowledge will be conveyed and gets applied e.g. on real cases for real companies. It will be a mixture of individual and team projects to prepare one perfectly for work in companies.

If the MSc programme of your choice has optional specialisations: which specialisation(s) interest you most, and why?

During the first quarter of the third semester I am really interested in taking the courses "Inclusive Design" and "Biomechanics". The first one I like from an ethical point of you view as it means to integrate a specific group of people. E.g. for my bachelor thesis I interviewed several visually impaired people and noticed their desperation about being visually impaired. In my opinion, good design integrates people in a way that they do not consider their differentness as a disadvantage or even be aware of advantages that they have. "Biomechanics" also helps to design products for humans and can be applied in various fields of design, but definitely is especially an advantage considering medical design projects. It is an amazing aspect to have the option of including medical design aspects into my studies as I am really interested in medicine. Before I started my studies in "Product Design" I studied for one year "Food and Nutrition", which is also an important part of medicine and the human body. My heart is beating for design, but integrating other topics that I love makes this discipline even more interesting and exciting. For the same reason I also like to choose another medical design related course, which is called "Health Psychology: Tools & Methods".

Besides, I would like to do design projects in both quarters. This way it is possible to apply and strength my knowledge about design and strategy.

Last but not least "Drawing Techniques for Presentation" sounds like a good possibility for me to deepen my sketching skills. Being a good sketcher is definitely an advantage for a designer and could make the difference towards other applicants.

Describe your hypothetical thesis project; what kind of a project would you prefer if you were free to make a choice? Also briefly explain what you would want to explore in your thesis project. Provide a maximum of three hypothetical thesis topics and elaborate on your particular interests in them.

Birthrates decline. Medicine is getting better and better. Thus we are facing an increasing aging population. This means that in future it will be relevant to provide more services and products which deal with this kind of development. It would be really interesting for me to consider this topic under a medical aspect and cooperate with Philips Healthcare. An analysis of the next aging generation would be necessary, in this case the Baby Boomers. How are their needs? What problems will they face? How is it possible to integrate them better into society? Also old-age diseases like dementia or diabetes should be considered. This way I could work on one of my favourite topics medicine and help people to improve their lives.

As "Virtual Reality" is a future trend, it would be interesting for me to explore how a brand like Audi could benefit from it. Also, self-driving cars will be a big topic in the future. Thus an analysis of how to use VR inside a car could be relevant. How to entertain people inside a car when they do not have to concentrate on driving? How is it possible to create a new driving experience? How can we adapt this technique towards the brand of Audi? Also VR can be used for fairs to create new and exciting experiences for visitors.

As designers also have a responsibility on different topics like social development and ecology I would wish to improve this situation. Especially in a world with a growing human population and growing problems regarding limited resources it will be relevant to think about this topic. Questions could be asked like:

  • Which materials could be used for future products?
  • How to integrate several products into one? This way comfort and a certain standard could be maintained without using too many resources. An example of this development is for example the cell phone as it can be used to call people, as a small computer, a camera and various uses of apps.

Thus, I could imagine a cooperation with HP Inc. to analyse this certain topic.

A brief summary (maximum 250 words) of the thesis work or the final assignment (to be) done for your Bachelor’s programme, including information on the credits earned, grade, and full workload.

I will start my Bachelor thesis on 23th of march 2017 and will be finished by the end of July. In total I will get 30 credits for my thesis. The workload will be at least 40 hours a week and will be adapted towards the development of the project. As my supervisor asked me to think about various topics for my thesis, my definitive topic will be determined by him on the 12th of April 2017.

At the moment I am thinking about creating a product for visually impaired people. I already did several interviews with visually impaired and with a teacher who teaches how to cope with daily life problems as a visually impaired or trains them for job life. Though there already exist several products regarding the issue of "mobility" it still is a problem for the visually impaired. My idea is to use the new technique of self-driving cars to identify the surrounding. This data would be used to inform visually impaired tactilely via a bracelet and acoustically via earphones about their surroundings and improve their mobility.
