Massaging Quotations

I am quoting an article by Dr. David Livingston that reads, "It's not just what we learn out there in space, or about ourselves, or how to be a better steward of precious Earth."

In its current form, it doesn't quite fit into the sentence I'm writing. This is how I quoted it, but I'm not sure what the correct format would be for what I'm trying to do:

According to Livingston, not only do we learn about "space, [...] ourselves, [...] [and] steward[ship]," but yada yada yada.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Clive, but while your response is insightful, it's not actually what the original purpose of my question was. Let me clarify- I am seeking help regarding the way in which I quoted Dr. Livingston (i.e. "space, [...] ourselves, [...] [and] steward[ship],"). Is the quotation, with its multitude of square brackets containing ellipses for omitting material, a word to be inserted, and a suffi

Do not use the square brackets for the ellipses. Use them to insert words that were not actually part of the quote.
