Vocabulary

m.a.s.l.

One of my (Swedish) students, in an essay, wrote about a mountain top which was "2970 M masl". I understand that he means metres above sea level. My question is wether this is a natural way of expressing the size of a mountain. It´s not a scientific text, so I´d like it to be "2970 metres high" or something like that. any advice from a native speaker?
