Speech & Pronunciation

'Marry' sounds like 'merry' on this song?

Please, check "Marry the Night" by Lady Gaga. I'd swear I hear mErry.

As far as I'm concerned there's only one possible pronunciation, with the /ae/ sound of the vowel A as in CAT, or DRANK, or HAT.

Either that or my ears are damaged... :-)

No, it is the effect of regional accents in the US. You can tell what part of the US a person is from by listening to how they pronounce words, and the triplet Mary, merry and marry is one of the distinctions. In some regions these all sound the same, and in other regions they are different.
