Maybe "Each part carries four marks" makes sense in British English, but it's pretty puzzling for an American. Do you mean "each part (of this exam or assignment) is worth four points"? If it's not that, what do you mean? What does it mean to "carry marks"?

That's what it means in BrE. As you say, the sentence makes good enough sense in BrE.
